Bits & Bolts 2019

We have co-hosted with NUS School of Computing on the inaugural “Bits and Bolts 2019” hackathon event.

Themed “Building Resilience through Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Data Analytics”, the enriching event saw more than 20 teams from several universities, polytechnics, and junior colleges spend two days tackling urban, social and environmental issues with the aid of technology, as well as the guidance and mentorship of our leadership team and judges.

The hackathon presented a tremendous opportunity to seed potential solutions and lead the way for fresh perspectives and innovations. Some teams had leveraged open source data and public cloud tools for their proposed solutions, and some had innovative solutions, which demonstrated their technical competency in in data mining, sensors and digital wireless data communication technology.

The winning concepts, selected based on innovation, feasibility, impact, and other criteria, were by teams from:

– National University of Singapore (NUS) – for a public safety and security monitoring solution that filters suspicious activities and identify anomalies in crowded public areas.

– Jurong Junior College (JJC) – for an affordable and biodegradable device that floats on water, which is able to collect data and transmits it through GSM.

– Singapore Management University (SMU) and NUS – for an automated cyber threat hunter with the ability to detect and isolate advanced threats that evade existing security solutions in the network.
